Glen of Imaal Terrier History

The Glen of Imaal Terrier’s origins have been lost in history. What is known is that the dog’s name comes from the place in Ireland where this dog is believed to have gained popularity and possibly originated. The first public displaying of the breed in Ireland in 1933 but few people have seen one in the United States where it remains fairly fair. despite the fact that originally a hunting dog, like most terriers he has turn out to be more of a companion animal in latest years.




Glen of Imaal Terrier Description

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a sturdy dog that resembles the Welsh Corgi in that it is low towards the ground with brief legs. The harsh coat is medium duration with a gentle undercoat. Coat colors include wheaten from cream silver to blue and brindle (light blue, dark blue and/ or tan).The tail has a strong base and is both docked or left natural. When docked it is cut to about half it's length. Note: docking tails is illegal in most parts of Europe. The ears half pricked or rose. They are wide-set around the back of the best outer edge of the head, held around the back of the head when the dog is alert. The bowed legs are brief and well boned. The muzzle is strong, tapering towards the black nose. The stop is pronounced. The teeth meet in a level or scissors bite. The round, medium-sized eyes are brown. The head is in proportion towards the body. The skull is broad, slightly domed tapering towards the eyes.



Glen of Imaal Terrier Temperament

Glen of Imaal terriers are energetic and highly intelligent they need a superb strong ownership and discipline. They are typically fearless and loyal and so are superb with people but can be aggressive if not properly trained.These dogs will bark if they detect danger but will rarely bark without a reason. They respond well to obedience instruction and can be taught to retrieve. Glens are keen to learn. A hunting terrier at heart, the Glen likes to dig and chase. This breed does not bark much but when they do their voices are deep.They can live with cats if the cats are able to establish their dominance over the dog. The rules of the home should be made clear and stuck to. instruction should often be consistent with some perform in every session.



Glen of Imaal Terrier Care

If you are into displaying your dog, you will have to maintain their coat looking hard in appearance. They want to see the natural coat not an all primped up look. Do not scissor cut it and remember it should be stripped every 9-12 months.




Glens have a harsh outer coat as well as a gentle under coat that is really effortless around the upkeep if you just comb it weekly. The coat only grows three to 4 inches in total length, so it will not be a great deal of work on your part as far as grooming. This breed does not shed as well as a regular grooming will eliminate dead hair when you take them in to your groomer.



You must eliminate the hair that will grow in the canal of the ears. You will need to pluck them or they would be prone to infections. There are powders to dust inside to help pull them out.



Glen of Imaal Terrier Grooming

The coat of the Glen of Imaal Terrier does require regular maintenance, but only a minimal amount. the most important grooming task is to strip the coat. this is only necessary every six months. Clipping is recommended.



Glen of Imaal Terrier Training

It is well known that these dogs are really loving and loyal toward their owners, but they are also not overly demanding. They will definitely sound the alarm if a thing is wrong, and also this in return tends to make them really effective watchdogs. These dogs do fairly well around strangers, but they can sometimes be reserved. Glen of Imaal Terriers can be quite curious, and it is important to not let them loose if they are not in a secured area.
