Havanese History

The Havenese was developed in Cuba and was very famous using the wealthy people of the country before the Cuban Revolution. after the revolution, the breed almost started to be extinct. However, an American breeder intervened and began working to save the breed from that fate. Today, the breed is becoming increasingly famous using the U. S. and other countries.




Havanese Description

If never primped, clipped or altered in any way, the Havanese offers a rugged impression in a little dog.Tail is carried up more than the back when gaiting. The breed is of solid physical type and sound constitution. The Havanese offers a rugged impression of a little dog, it is sturdy, and while a small breed, it is neither fragile nor overdone.Chocolates also have green or amber eyes. In some European countries the dark and chocolate dogs, have been not always recognized. but the dark canines happen to be recognized for several years, and the Chocolate canines are now lately recognized. The gait is unique, lively & 'springy" which accentuates the happy character of the Havanese. In North America, all colors are recognized, no preference is given to one color more than another. dark and chocolate are chosen colors with a number of North American breeders. A chocolate Havanese must retain at least a 1 inch (2.6 cm.) patch of chocolate hair.Some Havanese hold a short haired recessive gene. If two Adults with this recessive gene have a litter of puppies, it is feasible that some of the puppies will be born with smooth coats. A Havanese with a short coat cannot be shown and is a serious fault using the show arena. Some have nicknamed the Havanese born with short coats Shavanese. eye rims, the nose and lips are solid dark on all colors except the true chocolate dog. The Havanese arrives in any color, including cream, gold, white, silver, blue, and black. Also parti and tricolors. The legs are powerful and allow for free and easy movement. The dim eyes and long tail are covered with long silky hair. The profuse coat varies from wavy to curly. The Havanese is a double-coated breed with soft hair, both on outer and undercoat. adult coat reaches 6 to 8 inches, and has a pearly sheen.



Havanese Temperament

The Havanese has a playful, friendly temperament unlike other toy dog breeds. It is at home with young kids and other pets and is rarely shy or anxious around new people. Clever and active, they will solicit attention by executing tricks. The breed does not need a lot of exercise.



The Havanese is a very people-oriented dog, frequently following their humans around the house. They are not overly possessive of their people and do not suffer aggression or jealousy towards other dogs, pets, or humans.




Their love of kids stems from their times as the playmate of small children. unlike most toy dogs, who are too delicate, anxious or aggressive to tolerate the frequently clumsy play of children, the Havanese, with care, is a cheerful companion to even younger children, and this is no small part of its growing popularity around the world. They are productive and do need exercise, though not as much as a big or even medium size pet.



Havanese Care

The Havanese does not mind small residing areas so apartment life is great. They have been developed to be family or companion canines and do not do well residing outside or inside of a kennel, they have to be around their family.

As stated above, if you will be showing your Havanese, grooming the coat is not necessary; however, if you only want them as a pet at home, you may wish to clip the hair for easier care. if you do keep the hair long, you will have to brush it at least twice every week. The excess hair between the pads will need clipped and you may wish to clip the hair around the feet to make them appear round.



Havanese Grooming


The coat of the Havanese may look unkempt, but it ought to be maintained on a regular basis. A professional groomer may be necessary to clip, wash, and provide general maintenance task of the breed's coat.
