Ibizan Hound History

It is theorized that the Ibizan Hound was brought by Phoenician traders from Egypt to the islands away the coast of Spain around 700-900 BC. The breed became popular on the island of Ibiza, in which it was used to hunt rabbit along with other small game. Indeed, Spanish hunters use the dogs in packs. The Ibizan Hound was fully recognized by the AKC in 1979.

Ibizan Hound Description

The Ibizan Hound ,is also called Podenco Ibicenco. The wire-haired has a longer coat of rough hair that is softer textured than the other two varieties. colors are white and red, white and tan, or solid white or red.The front legs are straight. Dewclaws may be removed. There are three varieties of Ibizan: smooth-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired. probably the most common is the smooth-haired and the long-haired is extremely rare. The erect ears are big and pointed. The neck is long, slender and slightly arched. The back again is level and straight. The chest is prolonged and deep. The teeth satisfy in a scissors bite. The small eyes are a clear amber to caramel in color. The entire body is fine boned and slender. The head is prolonged and narrow with a prolonged muzzle that tapers to a point, giving the appearance of a cone. It has a extremely small stop. The nose is a rosy flesh color.

Ibizan Hound Temperament

Ibizan Hounds are moderately intelligent, active, and engaging by nature. They rank 53rd in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs, being of average working/obedience intelligence. They are true "clowns" of the dog world, delighting in entertaining their people with their antics. though somewhat independent and stubborn at times, they do take well to instruction if positive methods are used, but will balk at punitive instruction methods. They are generally quiet, but will alarm bark if necessary, so they make wonderful watch dogs. They are sensitive hounds, and extremely wonderful around children along with other dogs alike. They generally make wonderful house dogs, but are active and athletic, as a result need a lot of daily exercise. They do not make wonderful kennel dogs.

Ibizan Hound Care

The Ibizan Hound can be fine in an apartment setting as prolonged as he enjoys outside exercise. They are active indoors but do their most suitable when given a big yard in which to romp, play, and chase anything they see. The primary thing to remember is they do jump extremely high from a complete standstill and will jump over any average size fence to hunt. The even worse thing is they will begin operating and you will not see them again until they are wonderful and ready. They will not do well being placed in a kennel.

Ibizan Hound Grooming

A vast majority of Ibizan Hounds have a short, smooth coat. For these types occasional brushing is all that is necessary to keep the coat healthy. A chemise will work just as efficient as a brush to keep this type's coat smooth. The wire-haired types have more coarse fur. It also only needs occasional brushing. There are extremely few long-haired Ibizan Hounds. These types need more standard brushing.

Ibizan Hound Training

These dogs should be trained gently. steady instruction is required though in order to prevent them from becoming bored. if the Ibizan hound is not trained properly, they might become bullies. This breed excels in hunting tasks and retrieving sports. Ibizan hounds are wonderful learners.
