Irish Wolfhound History

The Irish Wolf hound when standing on it's back legs can be taller than a regular sized man.The ancestors of the Irish Wolfhound were the Cu, a massive, shaggy dog that was utilized to pursue wolves, wild boar, and elk. The Irish Wolfhound was often given as a royal present, and it eventually became so popular that the breed’s export from Britain was no longer allowed. as the wolf populace dissipated in Europe, so did the Irish Wolfhound. The breed disappeared entirely in Ireland in 1766. it was after brought back to the nation by the Romans, where it was then carefully bred by a British army officer named Captain George Graham in the second half of the 19th century. The Irish Wolfhound was re-invigorated by the influx of great Dane and Deerhound blood.

Irish Wolfhound Description

The Irish Wolfhound is a giant sized dog, among the tallest breeds in the world, reaching the size of a small pony. The head is lengthy and the skull is not too broad. The muzzle is lengthy and somewhat pointed. The small ears are carried back against the head when the dog is relaxed and part way pricked when the dog is excited. The neck is long, strong and well arched. The chest is broad and deep. The lengthy tail hangs down and is also slightly curved. The legs are lengthy and strong. The feet are round, with well arched toes. The wiry, shaggy coat is rough to the touch on the head, body and legs and longer over the eyes and under the jaw. Coat colors include gray, brindle, red, black, pure bright or fawn, with gray being one of the most common.

Irish Wolfhound Temperament

The wolfhound of today is far from the one that struck fear into the hearts of the ancient Romans. Irish wolfhounds are often favoured for their loyalty, affection, patience and devotion. although at some points in background they happen to be used as watchdogs, unlike some breeds, the Irish wolfhound is usually unreliable in this role as they are often friendly toward strangers, although their size can be a natural deterrent. That said, when safety is required this dog is never found wanting. when they or their family are in any perceived danger they display a fearless nature. Owenmore wolfhound breeder Linda Glover believes the dogs' near affinity with individuals makes them acutely aware and sensitive to ill will or malicious intentions leading to them excelling as a guardian rather than shield dog.



An easygoing animal, they are usually quiet by nature. Wolfhounds often create a strong bond with their family and can become quite destructive or morose if left for lengthy periods. despite the need for their personal people, wolfhounds generally are somewhat stand-offish with total strangers. They should not be territorially aggressive to other domestic dogs but are born with specialized abilities and it is common for hounds at play to program another dog. This is a specific hunting behaviour, not a fighting or territorial domination behaviour. Most wolfhounds are very gentle with children and so are aware of their size and power. The Irish wolfhound is relatively easy to train. They respond well to firm, but gentle, consistent leadership. However, historically these dogs were required to operate at great distances from their masters and think independently when hunting rather than waiting for detailed commands and this can still be seen in the breed.



Irish Wolfhound Care

Shampoo and bathing is recommended on an as needed basis. As an average shedder, it does not need a great deal of maintenance, but should be brushed often. check for any eye and ear infections, as they are prone to this. The life span of the Irish Wolfhound is from 6 to 8 years.




The Irish Wolfhound has a medium sized rough coat, which needs good grooming with a stiff brush. The dead head of hair needs plucking once or twice a year and the breed is a medium shredder. They need plenty of physical exercise and an area where they can run around. too much physical exercise is not advisable as it interferes in their growth and development.



Irish Wolfhound Grooming

There is very little grooming required for the Irish Wolfhound. The coat will maintain a healthy condition as lengthy as it is brushed over a regular basis. more brushing is required when the coat is shedding.



Irish Wolfhound Training

Irish Wolfhounds are very quickly learners in general. They quickly catch onto what you want to teach them, so they are there very obedient dogs. This breed of dogs requires company training techniques. When still a puppy, they should be trained to not pull on the leash. Seeing that they are so strong, it can be a difficulty in the future when they are more mature.
